We’ve all been there, whether your photos are sitting in a shoebox in the back of your closet or taking up precious hard drive space on your computer, there are too many of them to count and they are in a hot mess.
As we get older, the years seem to fly by and before we get around to organizing our Christmas photos, it’s the next year’s holiday season already.
Organizing your photos doesn’t have to be a daunting task that takes over your life!
These 6 simple steps give you the ability to find your photos fast.
1. Start TODAY!
We all know that sorting through family photos is one of those things that just seems to get pushed further and further down the To Do List. You already have years to go through and if you tell yourself, “I’ll do it tomorrow” you will have years more before you know it.
Good thing we’ve made it SUPER simple, so you won’t want to procrastinate.
2. Weed out the BAD ones
Let’s face it, these photos take up A LOT of space either digitally or literally. Narrowing them down to only the good ones helps to free up some of that room and will make it MUCH easier to choose the best ones for projects like photobooks, Christmas cards and gifts down the line.
- Eliminate photos that are too similar to each other.
- Discard ones where a person’s head is cut off, eyes are closed or they are just plain unflattering (you know what I’m talking about: the dreaded double chins *shutter*)
- Don’t use photos that are:
- Too Dark
- Too Light

3. Do what makes sense FOR YOU
The prep work is complete and it’s time to decide how you would like to organize your photos. There is no right or wrong way to do this and it often depends on your final plan for your photos.
- Do you want to create a photobook with a certain theme?
- Are you organizing the photos so each of your children can easily find the pictures of themselves?
- Do you want to quickly be able to locate memories of certain holidays or events?
Whether you create folders or albums by month, person, events, locations or even how they make you feel, as long as it makes sense for you and you are easily able to find them later, that’s all that matters.
4. BACK IT UP
Once your photos are organized, make sure you take the time to store them online using digital archives such as the Cloud, Dropbox or Google Drive.
If some of your older photos are prints, this will mean the extra step of scanning them, but it is so worth it, and you will now have that photo forever no matter what happens to the physical copy.
Unfortunately, computer malfunctions also happen (as I found out when my ancient Toshiba laptop crashed 3 weeks before my wedding, taking all of my vendor info with it).
Alternatively, you can store your newly organized photos on a USB or external hard drive.
These methods also free up storage space on your computer and makes them easy to share/transport.
5. Be PATIENT with yourself
It took years to accumulate these photos and it will take more than an hour to sort through them. Depending on how many years you need to go back, this can take a while but if you set aside small blocks of time to do it over a few days or even weeks, you won’t get overwhelmed and you will get that time back when you can grab any photo you need quickly and easily (without spending hours searching right before that school genealogy project is due).
6. ENJOY your memories
Now that you have your photos organized in a way that makes sense to you, it’s time to do something tangible with them.
The list of ways to capture your memories in meaningful keepsakes is endless.
Some of the most popular choices are photobooks, calendars, phone cases and mugs.
BONUS! You have also just opened up a world of incredibly thoughtful gifts for any member of the family:
- your Fido-loving sister (pet bowl with her pup’s pic)
- grandma and papa (blanket with their grandchild’s photo on it)
